HOME Alice Springs

Last night’s public showing of the new work HOME (Alice Springs) was a big success with over 50 people stopping to watch the full projection.

Below is a series of images taken on the night. Being in a prominent and at times controversial part of the city, the huge faces sparked a lot of interest from passers-by.

Is Alice Springs your HOME?

Todd St near KFC - site for HOME projection

Craig Walsh has taken video portraits of Alice Springs locals and they are currently being edited into a new artwork. The public are invited to come and view Craig’s latest work HOME (Alice Springs):

7.30 – 9.30pmThursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May 2011

Todd St, Alice Springs, near KFC

This site has been described in the media, most memorably by Nicholas Rothwell writing for the Australian. His article was published on 19th February this year:

The infamous wall near KFC on Todd St will speak up with a diverse portrait of local people’s views on what “home” means to them. HOME can be seen as a counterpoint to the misery portrayed in the media and a way of reinterpreting and transforming the so called “Apartheid zones”.

Alice Springs residency

Craig and Hiromi are driving through the desert as we speak and will soon arrive in …

Their first port of call will be the Wide Open Space festival where you can meet up with them and be a part of an artwork called Who’s Average. You will also see Craig’s large scale projection works at the festival.

Find out about this project and what inspired Craig to take on a nomadic existence – Craig will be giving a free public talk at the Charles Darwin University theatrette at 1pm on Wednesday 27th April.

Following that the Digital Odyssey team will be recording ‘video portraits’ of local people talking about what defines ‘home’ for them. Have your say on this topic and be part of the work!

Drop in to Watch This Space  (4/9 George Crescent, Alice Springs)

on the 3rd or 4th of May

anytime between 2pm – 8pm   to get involved.

The final artwork will be presented in public places on 12 – 14th May. Stay tuned for the exact locations of the projections.

Alice Springs residency cancelled

Unfortunately late last week Craig injured his back and will have to take some time out of the Digital Odyssey tour to recover. Very regrettably this means the residency in Alice Springs will have to be cancelled for now, so Craig can take the necessary time for his recovery. He is aiming to commence the Digital Odyssey tour again starting in Winton, Qld in early June (the next venue on the tour schedule after Alice Springs).

The good news is that hopefully Craig will be able to undertake the Alice Springs residency next year, so we very much look forward to working with our local partners to bring Digital Odyssey to Alice Springs then.  We are very sorry for this change of plans, but wish Craig all the best with his speedy recover!
